Friends and Recommendations

Danny digs:

Green Dog Pet Supply: There are nearly as many dog stores as there are coffee shops in this town, and Danny loves them all. A lot. They give him treats. And this one’s next to our bank. (See Umpqua below)

It’s a Dog’s Life Playcare: This place is only a few blocks from our house, which is lucky for Danny. Linda at Dog’s Life has been incredibly understanding of Danny’s freakiness since we adopted him last fall and allowed him to visit for as little as five minutes and as long as a half-day — when he was ready for it.

PetSmart: You know how, despite your “live local” aesthetic, you end up buying stuff at Target? PetSmart is like Danny’s Target. Besides being a pet stuff superstore, it’s also a good dog-friendly excursion on very hot or very rainy days.

Tre Bone: Another neighborhood joint that sells cat and dog stuff. Danny particularly likes the big bones they sell there, and the treats the owners are always happy to hand out. We really need to work on “gentle.”

Umpqua Bank, Fremont and Alberta branches: Danny is his best self in this bank, and they love him for it. The tellers always give him hand-made carrot-cake treats that they keep in a bowl for well-behaved banking dogs.

Kristen likes:

About.com Guide to Dogs: A general site with information on health, behavior, breeds, games, and more. A good place to start your research.

ASPCA Virtual Pet Behaviorist: This is a fantastic resource when your dog is doing something weird and annoying, and you have no idea how to get him to stop. (They answer cat and horse questions, too.) The search function is a little hinky, but if you can guess the right terms, there’s a wealth of solid information available.

CentHound: This Twitter account posts tons of discounts on dog stuff, from food to treats to beds to toys. They can be borderline spammy, but I bought 6 months of Canadian flea treatment for Danny for something like $60 plus shipping. If I’ve used it and been happy, I figured it was worth mentioning.

Oregon Humane Society: I’ve been volunteering here as a dog-walker since 2008, which is how we found Danny in the first place. He likes coming here, too, since he gets hotdogs by the baggie-full when we take classes here, but I come here every week to walk dogs like Danny until they find their new homes.

The Pongo Fund: Feeding the pets of the homeless and less fortunate, thanks to a well-stocked pet food bank that can always use more help.

  1. Great post. I have enjoyed reading it. Is there a way I can stay updated with new posts? I have no clue how to do this… Thanks!
