This is one of the dangers of doing math in your head as you walk:
- Danny and I walk 3 or 4 miles or so every morning, and another mile and a half or two in the afternoon, seven days a week.
- That’s, say, 6 miles a day times 7 days a week, or about 40 miles a week (I made room for laziness).
- That adds up to at least 150 miles a month (again with the laziness factor)
- That’s 1800 miles a year!
Oh, but wait. Danny is only one dog. What about all those shelter dogs I volunteer to walk every Friday morning, one at a time?
- We go around and around one loop at the Oregon Human Society; I’m there about 2 hours
- I take out probably 10 dogs every week
- I figure I walk another 5 miles each week at OHS
- But, sometimes I’m on vacation or sick
- So let’s say I walk dogs 48 weeks a year
- That’s another 240 miles per year!
So, given some days are nasty and rainy and Danny and I short our walks but other days are lovely and we go hiking in the woods, I’m in the 2000-miles-per-year range. That’s nearly what I put on my car odometer each year as a freelance writer with a home office.
What does this mean for the Active Dog Chronicles? Another bulleted list!
- More focus on walking techniques and troubles (leash biting!)
- More about the dogs at OHS, who have different issues than Danny (pulling! HARD!)
- More interaction with readers, I hope. If you’ve got questions about your own dog walking habits or problems, leave ‘em in the comments. If I don’t have a good answer, I know who to ask. If you’ve got a question, I’m sure someone else does, too.
